Prostate cancer is a medical complication that affects more men as compared to women. Its widespread prevalence has resulted in development of numerous myths and misconceptions relating to the ailment. A cancer is a very serious complication where the cells of the body multiply in an uncontrolled manner.

Multiplication of white cells in the body that hampers the functioning of the immune system results in blood cancer. Excessive reproduction of cells in an unnatural manner in the mouth will result in cancer of the mouth. It is difficult to analyze why cancer occurs. A few symptoms and risk factors are known but there is no clear solution that will prevent the cancerous growth from occurring.

An enlargement of prostate, a gland which is situated near the bladder, will squeeze the urethra. This will make it difficult for the individual to pass urine properly. On the other hand, a cancer of the prostate will result in uncontrolled multiplication of cells and the growth may not just squeeze the urethra but may also affect the bladder. Uncontrolled growth will, sooner or later, prove fatal. The same need not be the case with the enlargement of the prostate.

In such a scenario, it is important to get tested to determine the condition of the prostate at regular intervals. Further, any complications should not be equated with cancer immediately. One must find out whether it is just a question of enlargement of the prostate or the presence of a cancerous growth on the same.

What are the Risk Factors for Prostate Cancer?

As the second highest cause of cancer related deaths among American men, prostate cancer has inspired a great deal of worry for men, especially as they grow older. All men should take precautions by getting prostate health exams as recommended by their doctors. It’s also important to inform your doctor of any additional risk factors you may have that relate to prostate cancer so that he or she can determine whether additional screening is appropriate.

The largest risk factor for prostate cancer, of course, is one your doctor will already be aware of. Age plays a large role in prostate cancer risk, as the cancer rarely occurs in men under the age of 40. The risks increase yearly after the age of 50, with the vast majority of prostate cancers being detected in men over the age of 65.

Ethnicity also plays a role in your relative risk of developing prostate cancer, with the race most affected being African-Americans. White men are more affected by prostate cancer as a whole than Asians. The reasons for these discrepancies has not been determined, but these are important facts to keep in mind.

There are also genetic and hereditary factors which seem to indicate increased risk for prostate cancer. If other men in your family have developed prostate cancer, it’s important to let your doctor know, especially men in your immediate family. This is particularly true if these men had cancer detected at an early age.

Lifestyle can also play a role. Your diet, weight, and exercise habits may contribute to your risk of prostate cancer, although these risk factors are not completely understood by the medical community. Always keep your doctor informed of your health and wellness habits, even if they seem to be inconsequential.

Understanding your risk factors can prepare you for the future.

Prostate Cancer: Causes

Everyone knows to worry about prostate cancer, and everyone knows that regular screenings are important. But what about prevention? Do we know what actually causes this fatal cancer? And can it be avoided?

At a very basic level, yes, we understand what causes prostate cancer. Changes in cellular DNA lead to mutations which then become cancerous cells. These cancerous cells multiply and form tumors. However, the changes that cause these mutations are not entirely understood.

There are some hereditary factors related to prostate cancer risk, but some of the changes in DNA that take place over time are not hereditary. These changes take place during a man’s lifetime, and may be affected by environment, lifestyle, or other factors. Some mutations may in fact be completely random.

Hormonal levels may also play a role in predicting prostate cancer probability.

It is not possible to predict 100% whether or not someone will develop cancer of the prostate. However, by understanding the causes of prostate cancer and the factors which appear to play a role, doctors are better able to assess an individual’s risk of developing the cancer and work to come up with an appropriate screening regimen which will detect cancer at an early stage.

Some risk factors men should be aware of when considering talking to their doctors include age, which is the largest risk factor associated with prostate cancer, family history–whether other men in their immediate family have developed the cancer, especially at a young age–and lifestyle. A healthier diet may play a role in reducing prostate cancer risk, for example. Ethnicity and race seem to play a role also, with African American men having the highest risk of developing cancer of the prostate, and Asian and Hispanic men the lowest risks. Non-Hispanic white men fall somewhere in the middle.

If you are a man that is 40 years or older and have never had a prostate exam, it’s time to get with the program and have the health of your prostate checked. If you have a family history of any prostate cancer, having this routine examination yearly is an absolute necessity.

Like so many factors within the human body, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet and getting the proper amount of rest and exercise are all great ways to prevent long-term problems with the prostate.

If you’re a smoker, it’s time to check the more healthy option of electric cigarettes. Avoiding tobacco products can significantly reduce the risk of cancer in just about every part of the body.

Prostate Cancer is no laughing matter. With early detection, most prostate problems can be cured. Although all cases of Prostate Cancer are not curable, many are benign and treated with relatively simple procedures.

It’s time to get real about that unattractive paunch you’ve acquired over the years. During the Holiday’s men tend to gain anywhere from 1-5 pounds. This weight is not always lost and tends to accumulate over the years. Like just about every health problem, being overweight only compounds the problem, and men that are overweight tend to have a higher risk of getting Prostate Cancer.

Eating healthy and drinking water are also great ways to reduce the risk of getting Prostate Cancer. Healthy meals with proper nutrients tend to help the body maintain a proper nutritional balance and drinking multiple glasses of water per day tend to flush the body from harmful things that can cause health problems.
There is no reason to fear a Prostate examination! A Colonoscopy is a good thing, and the easiest way to prevent long term problems with the Prostate. If it’s been more than a year, it’s time to commit to your long-term health.

Ibuprofen: Troublemaker or Friend for BPH Sufferers?

Coated 200 mg ibuprofen tablets, CareOne brand...
Image via Wikipedia

Any American man suffering with an enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), knows how uncomfortable it is. Some look for alternative measures to alleviate such discomfort and others take defensive measures and limit certain like medications, which could aggravate their condition. Commonly consumed over-the-counter medicines like cold and allergy medicines can be troublemakers for men with prostate issues. A popular medication, Ibuprofen, a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory, or NSAID drug, has different, and possibly hopeful results for BPH sufferers.

For BPH sufferers, some Ibuprofen side effects could be a light in the darkness. Recently, American researchers indicated that long-term use of NSAID medications, like Ibuprofen, were related to a reduced risk in the development of BPH symptoms and slowed urinary flow. This evidence is contrary to what scientists from the Netherlands found; their research indicates that men taking NSAIDs were much more likely to develop serious urinary difficulties. While it would seem that both studies are at odds with one another, it may indicate that Ibuprofen is good for one and not good for another.

The American study assessed BPH symptoms at their onset. Promising evidence has been found linking inflammation to the development of BPH. If these findings ring true, regular consumption of NSAID medications may slow BPH symptoms. The Dutch research studied long-standing cases of acute urinary retention and discovered that men who had only recently begun using NSAIDs were at a higher risk. These men may have been developing BPH for quite some time before taking NSAIDs and there is really no concrete way of knowing that information. NSAID medications may have caused the difficulties by triggering something within the bladder instead of directly affecting the prostate. Obviously more research is needed. In the meantime, any man with BPH who notices an increase in symptoms, whether taking an NSAID or not, should talk to their doctor as soon as possible.

Defend Yourselves, Men!

Let’s face some facts here, right now. For one thing, we are men, not women. We do not typically sit in a circle crying, discussing our feelings and hoping that things will get better without any direct action on our parts. We are men; we have the need to hunt, and fight, and kill things. It is in our very being to be the aggressors in most situations. Whether we are courting a woman, playing a sport (preferably one that lets us slam at full speed into any guy who looks at us the wrong way), or rocking the corporate boat, we m

en like to conquer and dominate. And there is nothing wrong with this, either. If not for the desire to be better than we were before, nobody would ever have invented any of the great things that make our lives better and easier today. We would probably still be living in caves or mud huts, picking bugs off of each other, if not for our unyielding ambitions.

And this aggressive ambition should also extend unabashedly into the realm of fighting off cancers. Prostate cancer assaults us at our very manhood. Think about it. When your prostate gets infested with these disgusting cancer cells, it is like a small band of revolutionaries trying to overthrow your rule of law and life. They are evil, and they want to destroy you. So you must be the emperor of your own life, and put them down the way they deserve… mercilessly.

While it is perfectly acceptable to pray to a higher power (it’s always good to have allies, no matter how confident you may be), and there are tons of little things you can do to help yourself out (such as not stressing about the matter), it is our duty as men to defend our prostates. After all, a prostate that doesn’t work doesn’t allow you to make love properly. Will you allow a few tiny pieces of your own body to strip you, not only of your power as a man, but of your right to a healthy sex life?
