Prostate Cancer and Impotence

A common side effect following prostate cancer treatments is impotence: the inability for a man to maintain an erection sufficient to engage in sexual intercourse.  Prostate cancer itself is not the cause of impotence. It is generally the treatments used to combat the cancer that cause men difficulty in getting an erection.

Generally the treatments that cause erectile dysfunction include surgery in which the entire prostate gland is removed; the various forms of radiation therapy; hormone therapy; and finally, most forms of cryosurgery – the procedure by which cancerous cells are frozen.

There have been improvements in the procedures used to treat prostate cancer which have increased the probability that those who suffer impotence following treatment will be able to obtain an erection. They include advances in the equipment used when performing cryotherapy and brachytherapy.  There are also never-sparing techniques which have been developed when performing a prostatectomy. These techniques spare many of the neurovascular nerves that help stimulate erections.

One study has shown that impotence results 75% of the time following regular prostatectomy procedures compared to 66% when the new nerve-sparing techniques are employed.

However, even if a man can get an erection following surgery of this type, he should also be able to reach an orgasm. The orgasm however will result in little to no ejaculation.  This resulting infertility is generally not a problem in most cases since most men suffering from prostate cancer are older and are no longer interested in procreating. Nevertheless, when fertility is at issue it is possible to “bank” sperm prior to the procedure.

Improving Prostate Cancer Testing

“Let’s take a look at your PSA.” That is a phrase that more and more men could be hearing from their doctors. The prostate-specific antigen or PSA is the first line of defense against prostate cancer. It’s a blood test used in screening male patients, and it’s a very serious issue. A recent survey from the National Cancer Institute found that there were close to 218,000 new diagnoses of prostate cancer last year. Of that number, over 32,000 succumbed to the deadly disease. Thanks to improvements in prostate cancer testing, the PSA is becoming an increasingly effective tool for early detection.

An elevated PSA level doesn’t always mean that cancer is present. Those results could be due to an enlarged prostate or infection. It is also difficult to specify which type of cancer might be present with the PSA screening alone. The results of a PSA screening could indicate the need of a biopsy. This is where the issue of health informatics comes into play. The goal should be to find ways not to miss the presence of cancer. There are clinical test trials going on today involving the PCA3 test and a screening of the TMPRSS2 and ERG genes present in urine.

Combining these various tests can provide a complete diagnosis for a patient. It is recommended that men between the ages of 40 and 50 begin to have annual prostate cancer exams. Beyond the physical exam, it might be beneficial to add the PSA to your annual check-up. You could also ask about additional screening options.

Prostate Cancer- The silent invader

Humans continue to find comfort in life with his inventions and latest technologies that tremendously changed the present lifestyle. This has unknowingly generated new life threatening diseases that have decreased the average life span of human, compared to previous generations. Cancer is one such medical condition that has been diagnosed in its various types depending on the part of the body affected. It is caused when normal cells start multiplying in an uncontrollable fashion, which is then said to be transformed into a cancer cell.

Prostate cancer affects the prostate gland, a part of the male reproductive system located at the base of the urinary bladder. Its normal function is to help in controlling urination and mainly to produce some substances that form part of semen. When the cells of this gland start duplicating without control, it forms tumors, which leads to prostate cancer. It is very commonly found in middle aged men and rarely in youngsters.

As this is a slowly developing malignancy, there are not much symptoms or signs in the initial years. But later, common symptoms reported by patients are frequent urination, especially during night, and problems with sexual functionality like erectile dysfunction and sometimes painful ejaculation. There are no specific reasons for its occurrence, however, there are indications that increase in age, genetic history, exposure to certain toxins or chemicals, and deficiency or some vitamins and minerals like vitamin D and selenium can also increase the risk of getting prostate cancer.

The diagnosis of the disease is done by initial medical examination. If any unusual changes in size or shape of gland, or a lump is found, a sample tissue is given for biopsy. Treatments are usually done based on the stage of the disease, the most common method being surgical removal of the gland.

It is advisable for men of age above 40 to undergo regular checkups as a preventive measure.

Prostate Cancer- Prevention And Cure

Image via Wikipedia

Being one of the most common types of cancers seen in men, the prevention and cure of prostate cancer has become a subject of interest and a topic of research in recent times. As this disease does not show any symptoms as such, especially during the starting stages, the diagnosis and treatments are usually done in late stages. But as people are now becoming more conscious about their health, it makes them well aware of several common medical conditions and the prevention for the same.

As such there are no preventive measures for prostate cancer. This is because genetic history is one of the reasons for its occurrence. So what is usually done is avoiding the spread of the tumor and suggesting a regular checkup or screening after a particular age. There are some natural methods like taking some medicines regularly, or preventing exposure to some chemicals. Dietary supplements of vitamin D and selenium, intake of soy, the lycopene protein found in tomatoes, all are recommended to decrease the possibility of the disease attack. But these are not medically proved or authentic.

The treatment of prostate cancer depends on the stage of the disease, diagnosed by blood tests and biopsy. Once the stage of medical condition is confirmed, treatment is decided. The most common methods are surgical removal of the organ in case the tumor is locally found on the gland. If the cancer has spread to local areas, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and such similar treatment methods are done to avoid further spread of the tumor. Patients in the first and second stage of disease are now curable to some extent.

In the third stage of the cancer, in which the tumor is spread to more parts like bone and lymph nodes, a cure is not possible. The only way is to control the spread and relieve the patient from the pain. Some herbal and natural remedies exist, but they are not medically approved.

Prostate Cancer- Diagnosis And Treatment

Prostate Cancer is the most common form of cancer seen in men, which affects one of the reproductive organs in men, called prostate gland. It is seen in aging men and sometimes in people exposed to chemical environment, not neglecting the important role played by genetic history and lack of certain dietary supplements. Symptoms are not shown in most cases, which make its diagnosis and treatment late in many cases.

The preliminary diagnosis is done by two screening tests. First one is digital rectal examination (DRE) in which the doctor does physical examination to detect any strange lumps or uncommon change in the shape and size of the prostate gland. The second one is a blood test called prostate specific antigen (PSA), which determine the level of a protein produced by the gland. This test is simple, reproducible and accurate. A quantitative result showing more than 4ng per ml is considered positive for prostate cancer. But this result is also seen in aged men due to increased size of gland, and in men with prostatitis.

If the initial screening gives a positive result or a doubt of possible malignancy, the next step in diagnosis is biopsy, in which a small portion of the tissue from affected area is obtained and sent for detailed microscopic examination. The result of biopsy is combined with an ultrasound scan of the gland to give a detailed report. Once the disease is confirmed through biopsy, the stage of the cancer is determined by several detailed tests like radionuclide bone scans, chest x-rays, CT and MRI scan and cytoscopy to see if the cancer has spread to other areas like bone and nearby lymph nodes.

The treatment methods usually depend on the stage of disease. Surgical removal for localized tumor and radiotherapy, hormonal, chemo and cytotherapy are done for locally spread and for advanced stages of disease. First stage patients can be cured whereas later stages are waiting and watch approach.
