Diagnosing Prostate Problems

Diagnosing prostate problems begins at home, but treatments are available from trained physicians.

What Men Need to Look Out For

Since the prostate is located within the body, it can seem impossible to determine whether there is a problem in its function. But men can diagnose their own prostate health issues by thinking about their current urination patterns as well as their performance in bed. If they have noticed any new changes to their prostate, they should write these changes down to see if they resolve on their own. A one time bout of impotence, for example, may be no need for alarm, but if this has been happening frequently, it’s time to see a doctor. Men need to look out for:

  • Any troubles or pain with urination
  • Any troubles or pain with ejaculation

These may simply be signs of a temporary issue or they might be signs of prostate cancer. By keeping track of when they appeared and what at home treatments seem to help, a physician will be better able to help a patient.

Is Treatment Necessary?

When a prostate problem heals on its own, a man may not have to look into professional treatment. But if a prostate symptom doesn’t resolve within two weeks, it’s a good idea to see a physician. The doctor can assess the situation, diagnose the problem, do tests, and then decide whether the problem is something which only requires home care or if the patient needs to look into medical therapies and cancer treatments.
