Prostate Cancer Treatment
Prostate cancer treatment approaches have changed over the years, but their success rates have risen.
Wait and See Approach
Many more physicians believe that aggressive prostate cancer treatments are necessary. Because diagnosing prostate cancer has become easier, the tests are showing cancers at very early stages of growth. In these stages, treatment isn’t necessary as the cancer may not become anything larger or dangerous in the patient. Doctors choose instead to watch the cancer’s movement at regular intervals and the patient does not have to have any treatments.
Chemotherapy
When cancer has begun to spread in the body, it’s often recommended that patients take high dose medications to kill off the cancer cells. But since this medication flows throughout the body, the medication will also kill healthy cells. This can cause a number of painful side effects for the cancer patient, including pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and hair loss.
Radiation
Radiation is a more targeted approach to killing cancer cells by aiming radiation at the cells themselves. The cells are killed off and the cancer can be contained in this way. While some patients exhibit no side effects to the treatment, others find that they have cancer fatigue and digestive issues as a result of the radiation. In addition, some researchers are concerned about the possibility of the radiation causing more cancerous cell mutations.
Surgery
For those with large prostate growths, the patient may need to have these removed in addition to having other treatments. In removing the prostate growth, the patient will be able to ejaculate and urinate normally.
