Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a growing concern for men, though many more treatment options are now available.

A Common Cancer Concern

While cancer itself seems to be pervasive in society, prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men, with many thousands of men being diagnosed each month. The good news is that most cases of prostate cancer, when found early, are highly treatable and curable. Those who have a higher risk of prostate cancer include those who are over the age of 65, men who are black, those who are obese, and those with a family history of prostate cancer.

In order to diagnose prostate cancer before it spreads in the body, it’s helpful to have a patient have their prostate examined at each medical checkup. This way, if there are any suspicious growths, they can be biopsied and treated before the tumor moves to other parts of the body. In addition, men should check their prostate regularly to ensure there are no growths. If they have had any troubles with urination or ejaculation, these problems should be mentioned to their primary care doctor.

Treating Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer seems to be caused by mutations in the DNA of the prostate. When these cells are mutated, they begin to reproduce, making all of the cells mutated. In doing so, this causes growths to spread in the body. Since these cells are taking up space in the body, they take up the space where healthy cells would reside, causing harm to the body. There are a variety of cancer treatments now available for prostate cases. One of the newer treatments is to do nothing, while radiation, chemotherapy, and other therapies are also options.
